Dharun Ravi had been found guilty of evidence tampering after he filmed his gay roommate having relations with another man. His roommate then killed himself. In the trial the Clementi's lawyer tried to make it seem as Ravi was committing a hate crime but Ravi's lawyer said he was acting foolishly and shouldn't be the reason of Tyler's suicide.
After reading multiple article about the same thing, I still conclude that Ravi was committing a hate crime and should be punished for it.
